Friday Love

friday love has been missing the last two weeks, but never fret, your weekly dose is back.

new shoe arrivals from kate spade on piperlime.  o.m.g.  i love these shoes.  the only way they could be improved is if they offer them in navy stripes.  so amazing in every way.

pocket popover shirt from the gap.  ooooooh love!  i've got outfit ideas running through my head involving brightly colored j.crew no. 2 pencil skirts, tights, and boots.  dear santa, please bring me a gap gift card.

coat worn this week on the mindy project from  this week's mindy project episode was definitely my favorite of the season so far.  so many awesomely funny moments.  plus there was a major fashion highlight: this modcloth coat.  and guess what?  it's only $125.  i love when tv shows use clothes you can actually afford to recreate.

plaid perfect shirt and circle skirt from j.crew.  such a perfect christmas eve outfit.  add some navy tights and some brown boots and boom! outfit completion.  if you haven't noticed a pattern, i've mentioned tights multiple times in this post.  it's getting pretty chilly around these parts, so i can't imagine having bare legs anytime soon.  also, the fact that this skirt has pockets makes it absolutely perfect.  love.

Winter Flowers

today i received my first round of christmas gifts that i bought online.  it really is the most wonderful time of the year.  coming home to packages every day (even if those packages aren't for me) is such an awesome feeling.  i did buy one thing for myself.  i've been on the look out for a new statement necklace to wear to an upcoming wedding i have in a few weeks and i've finally found it.
this blue flowered beauty is from j.crew factory store.  i got it on super sale plus free shipping.  can't wait to rock some winter flowers to a december wedding.

Watch Out Or The Tree Gets It

in case you were wondering my apple pie was a smashing success on thanksgiving.  i guess all this time i've been a closet pie baker.  who knew.  i hope everyone's thanksgivings were delightful.  mine were lovely, but quite long.  i did get dolled up in a new dress to celebrate the occasion.
this plaid beauty from the gap was the perfect thanksgiving outfit.  it was loose enough to be able to stuff my face, but had a matching tie belt to give some shape.  i also want to steal one of AJD's belts and try it with a menswear brown belt on my next wear.  the tights are from target (merona size medium/tall aka the greatest size ever created for tall ladies), and the boots are old anne klein.

AJD and i spent the majority of the remaining long weekend watching 19 episodes of homeland (we're all caught up now), some dexter, and a bunch of movies.  it was super relaxing.  on sunday we figured it was time to leave the house, so we went out to breakfast, then saw argo at the moooovies (even though you know the ending, it keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time), and then we headed to cut down our christmas tree.

growing up, my family always cut down our own christmas tree.  i guess a lot of people don't do this, but this tradition i've continued on with AJD.  i mean it's not really christmas until you kill a tree.
this is me in my new hat from the gap (it's awesomely warm and has a pom pom) getting super nervous for our tree.

and then the tree got it...
the tree didn't stand a chance.

but now, it looks even better.  plus we're feeding it water, so we're not torturers (i know.  i've been watching way too much homeland).

Apple Pie. Nailed It.

tonight the baking extravaganza continued, with my first try at apple pie from scratch.  i used my trusty food processer to make the crust, and it worked like a champ.
i have to say, i was most nervous to make the crust (probably because it's my favorite part of the pie), but it turned out to be super simple.
next up was the apple filling.  i used a mix of apples from russell orchards in ipswich and a couple cortland apples i bought at the grocery store.  i covered those bad boys in a cinnamon and sugar mixture and voila, pie filling.
finally, i got a little creative with the air holes.  the recipe said to just make x's, but i brought it back old school with designs just like my mom used to do.

i can't wait for the taste test tomorrow.  i have to say, regardless of a taste, she's a beauty.

in prep for turkey day on thursday, i came home from work and immediately started baking.  i am not a baker.  i don't like that you have to put in exact amount of ingredients.  i like to throw shit around when i'm cooking, but when you bake you have to follow the recipe and do what the bigwhig cooks say.  my big gripe is with butter.  i prefer to just melt it in the microwave.  so much easier to mix.  i know this is very un-kosher when it comes to baking, but you know what?  these pumpkin chocolate chip cookies are freaking delicious, melted butter and all.  so i guess melting butter in the microwave is my way of sticking it to the man.

if you're so inclined for these amazing cookies, here's the recipe (from moosewood cookbook):

1 cup butter, at room temp (or in the microwave if you're a rebel)
1 cup sugar
1 cup pumpkin puree
1 egg lightly beaten
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
2 cups unbleached all purpose white flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground allspice
1/2 tsp salt
bag o'chocolate chips

preheat over to 375

in large mixing bow, cream together butter and sugar.  add pumpkin, egg, and vanilla and mix until well blended.  sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and add to the mixing bowl.  stir well to form a soft batter.  stir in the chocolate chips.

drop teaspoons onto large, unoiled baking sheet.  bake for 10-15 minutes until slightly brown on bottom.

the baking extravaganza continues tomorrow with my first ever attempt at apple pie (from scratch)!

Whoa Major Blog Fail

woops.  haven't posted since last monday.  big blog fail.  i thought about going back and writing the blog posts that i had planned for every day last week (that's right i had stuff to write about, i just got lazy and/or busy), but i decided to just forget about last week, and move forward.

this past weekend, i purchased my wedding dress.  huzzah!  i can't show pictures since AJD reads the blog, but just know that it's awesome and i'll post pictures in september.  don't hold your breath.  that's a long time from now.

besides that, AJD and i laid low.  we watched a lot of dexter on demand (kind of jumping the shark for me.  ever since john lithgow's season it hasn't been as good), we watched a lot of football (go pats!), and we ate a lot (mmm pizza, turkey chili, and roast beef sandwiches - don't worry all separate meals on multiple days).  not super awesome for my diet, but it was all delicious.

on top of the tasty food AJD and i got to imbibe in our homebrewed oktoberfest beer.
dark and delicious.  cheers!

They Looked Back at Me, Remotely, Possessed by Intense Life

this past weekend was wedding central over in these parts, so not much to report on fun things i did.  i did accomplish narrowing my dress down to one, but i still need to go back to actually make the purchase.  on sunday, AJD and i locked down our florist, so two big checks happened this weekend.

checking back in on my 30 before 30 challenge i made for myself, i checked off something on that list as well last week.  i finished re-reading the great gatsby.  i wanted to reread the book before the new movie comes out with leonardo dicaprio.
image from
i totally forgot how depressing this book is.  i am still pumped for the movie, but pumped in a different way (meaning i'll have to be in the mood to be down in the dumps after seeing the movie.  the ending is a killer - literally and figuratively).  AJD made the comment that carey mulligan is only in depressing movies, and once again that statement fits with this movie.  but leonardo dicaprio is in it as the babe so i obviously have to see it.  ever since leo was in romeo and juliet back in the day with claire danes, i just can't quit him.

Friday Love

image from
mindy kaling on the improper bostonian magazine cover.  i love me some mindy.  if you haven't checked out her new show, the mindy project, you definitely should.  the show is still trying to find its footing, but mindy herself is amazeballs (she even gets an extra stamp of approval since she's originally from massachusetts).

fendi's new line of striped bags.  super pricey, but so purdy.  there's so many different styles of bags, all with the traditional fendi stripes.  love the reddish/orangish pop of color on the cross body bag.

daniel craig in james bond.  grrr.  skyfall on sunday, yes please.  daniel gets a double grrr on this friday.

Do You Like Apples?

continuing with the weekend recap, sunday was a super fall day.  it was perfect fall weather and AJD and I partook in a perfect fall activity.
we headed to russell orchards in ipswich, ma for their apple and wine festival.  AJD and i have been super busy, so we missed out on pick your own apples, so we figured drinking wine and buying apples was the next best thing.
the wine tasting was bumping.  there were 4 stations and you got to try about 6-8 wines at each station. all of russell orchard's wines are fruit wines or hard ciders.  all the stations also had fudge, meats, cheeses, and nuts to cleanser one's palate.
after drinking a whole bunch of wine, we then used our tickets that we had purchased at the start for some apple crisp and caramel apples.  so delicious.
and then we finished the car ride home with some amazing apples cider donuts.  perfection.

No Envy, No Fear

this weekend was chock full, so my recap will span over two days (it was that good).  saturday during the day, AJD and i went to a college football game, i got a mild raccoon tan on one side of my face from the sun which has since thankfully faded, ate some delicious greek food, and then headed into boston to see joshua radin in concert.

i've been a huge fan for years now and have never seen his show until now.  as suspected, he was amazing live.  he was super witty while chatting to the crowd, but my favorite highlight was when he unplugged his guitar and stepped away from the mic during "no envy, no fear" and let the orpheum theatre do the work.  he sounded awesome without the help of electronics and it was something totally different that i had never seen done before.

here are some photos i snapped during the evening:
the orpheum is one of my favorite venues in boston.  so much better than house of blues.  i don't know if it was joshua radin or the concert organizers, but when we arrived we were told our tickets had been upgraded, so we got to watch the whole show five rows from the stage, which is by far the closest i've ever sat during a concert.  pure awesomeness ensued.

Update Central

back when i turned the ripe old age of 29, i posted a 30 before 30 challenge for myself.  one of the items on the list was to buy fresh flowers the first week of every month.  so i haven't really done this.  i had flowers from mine and AJD's anniversary which counted for august, but i missed september and october.  my main goober AJD surprised me today with some flowers to get me back on track.
now that i'm back balls deep into this challenge, i'll just have to buy myself flowers 2 extra times over the next nine months.  i think i can manage.  flowers are delightful.  i'll have a full update on the 30 before 30 challenge a little later.  i'm mostly doing a good job.  after the holidays, i'm going h.a.m. (hard as a mother-f'er).
